The Adirondack Truffle Company sits on Smithfield Boulevard, in Plattsburgh, New York. It is an unassuming little shop from the outside, but the inside is adorned with quaint Adirondack decor. Passing through the doors, the intoxicating aroma of chocolate fills your senses, making your taste buds water with the anticipation of tasting a delicious truffle. Truffles are a tasty chocolate treat. Chocolate truffles are traditionally made with a rich pastry filling, which is then coated in creamy chocolate. Truffles can come in many different shapes, sizes, and flavors. And at The Adirondack Truffle Company, those shapes, sizes, and flavors are fashioned by hand, by Robin Osborne.

Our story begins with a passion for chocolate. It continues with a vision of a small town in rural America finding itself in the infancy stages of a commerce explosion. After years in the media industry in New York's Capital Region, Deb Morris and her husband Jim decided it was time to turn passion and vision into a reality. Deb studied under chocolatiers & pastry chefs and began to create artisan truffles with wholesome ingredients and unique flavors, while Jim tackled the business plan. After each batch of truffles, Deb & Jim would discreetly place them on tables at gatherings and parties to gauge the guests' reactions. You can imagine the results. And so Barkeater Chocolates was born.

Charlie Johns Store was established in 1939 by Charles H. Johns, as a grocery and general store it was located on the adjacent corner of its current location, now a vacant corner. Dean Lane purchased the business from Charlie Johns in 1971. Prior to this the business had moved into a new expanded location in the building now called the Lane Emporium. By the time the mid 1980’s came about the store was once again ready for a major expansion. In 1986 the current store was ready for business. This new store allowed for much more modern amenities found in supermarkets, such as a deli and bakery departments as well as expansion of the already proven grocery and general store format, while maintaining the ol’ time feel and look of a country store. Dean’s three daughters each put their efforts into the business mostly helping them through high school and college years. Dean’s son Jonathan has been active in the business since the early 1990’s.
