The Adirondack Singers, Inc. became a public, not-for-profit
group in
1988, after a 20-year partnership with North Country Community College.
In June, 2001, we became a tax-exempt organization. Under our musical
director, Karen Butters, we exist to stimulate and promote an interest
in choral music; to provide a variety of fine
choral music to the general public of the area; to provide a venue
for soloists or small groups to perform in their own style, as our
guest artists; to coordinate choral groups in the Tri-Lakes region
(including active participation in the annual "Messiah Sing-In"
and the Adirondack Festival of American Music); and to support local
arts development (including the Festival of the Lakes). While our
"home" site is St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake, we
have traveled to give guest performances at Uihlein Mercy Center
in Lake
Placid, at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake every spring, as
guests of the
Sweet Adelines in their Christmas concert, and before hundreds of
Eastern
Star representatives at their NYS spring meeting, and as a "back-up"
group for a Lake Placid Christmas performance by Kenny Rogers.
Audiences at each of our concerts have stayed at an average of 100,
representing music-lovers of all ages from the Tri-Lakes region,
and
seasonal visitors from throughout the state. Hundreds of viewers
of
all ages have watched our concerts in their homes, as those concerts
have been broadcast on local access cable TV, courtesy of Adelphia
Cable, for
the past six years.
Our financial support comes from membership dues and donations from
those attending our concerts. We hold an annual meeting every January,
and
have an elected slate of officers, and three additional directors,
who
compose our board of directors. This board is responsible for financial
and
business decisions. Membership in the Adirondack Singers is open
to any adult or older student; no auditions are required, but the
ability to learn the
music and to perform in the concerts are necessities. Concert "seasons"
run
from late January through May, and from late September through December.
Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights, from 7:30-9:15, at St. Bernard's
Church in
Saranac Lake. Nominal dues are charged each season to support the
purchase
of new music.
